On November 29, Carleton’s Day for Good lived up to its name.
Together, we gave through Carleton to causes that matter. From Saskatchewan to Seoul, Florida to France, the Northwest Territories to here on campus, you – our alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends – joined together to help make higher education a force for good.
The good news? Thanks to the support of the generous Carleton community, our ambitious one-day goal of $150,000 was met – by 10:30AM!
The better news? By mid-afternoon, supporters from around the world had unlocked $150,000 in matching funds and doubled the impact of each gift made in support of innovative student projects, inspiring research initiatives and real-world learning opportunities.
The best news? By 11:59PM on November 29th, close to 1,000 donors came together on Carleton’s Day for Good to raise an unprecedented $243,867. Add the matching funds and that’s a total of $393,867 – in just 24 hours!
And what an impact! With your help, we supported over forty different Carleton causes that will equip our students, researchers and faculty with the resources they need to have a positive impact on campus, in our communities and around the world. On Giving Tuesday alone, there were 8 fully funded projects on Carleton’s crowdfunding platform, FutureFunder.ca, including causes like these:
The Bimaadiziwin ‘Good Life’ Fund: Bimaadiziwin, the Ojibwe word for ‘good life’, does not mean making money, buying material things or pursuing fame. Rather, it has to do with taking care of yourself, your family and your community. It is showing love by performing acts of kindness. It is living life as a kind, humble member of the community. Through the $8,955 raised on Giving Tuesday, we will help make this way of life possible for Indigenous students at Carleton by providing financial assistance to those who are unable to meet immediate and essential expenses as a result of a personal emergency situation.
With the $9,811 raised on Giving Tuesday, fourth-year students in the Faculty of Engineering and Design now have the financial resources they need to develop a device to assist in the early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease. Thanks to donor support, our innovative student engineers are now in the first phase of the project, testing and prototyping ideas while implementing a working design. The funding will also carry them through to the second phase of the project, allowing the student team to build a more refined and marketable final product.
On November 29, the Men’s Varsity Soccer Team got the kick start they needed to endow a student bursary to support current and future Ravens. The $25,330 raised (in just one day!) means that each year one deserving student-athlete on the team will be awarded $2,000 on the basis of financial need – in perpetuity. Funds will offset financial strain, helping students with tuition fees and the cost of books so they can strive to be their best in the classroom and on the field.
Above all, the overwhelming success of Giving Tuesday is a testament to the incredible things that can happen when the Carleton community comes together. As we make philanthropic strides in Collaborate, Carleton University’s $300M fundraising campaign, we are constantly reminded that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is with your vision, commitment, and collective impact that we are strengthening our foundation, empowering our students and bringing good to the community and the world. Truly, we are Here for Good.
