Established in memory of Stevie Cameron—author, editor, journalist and philanthropist—this fund will support undergraduate and graduate journalism students undertaking research and investigative reporting projects as part of their studies or coursework within the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University.
Over nearly three decades, Stevie built a prominent career in journalism, working with outlets including The Globe and Mail, Ottawa Citizen and Maclean’s, and serving as a co-host on CBC’s The Fifth Estate. She also took great pleasure in helping her younger colleagues through mentorship so they could forge their own paths in the field. Beyond her career, she had a passion for giving back to her community by serving underrepresented groups through philanthropy and volunteerism.
Her immense contributions include co-founding Out of the Cold—a volunteer program at St. Andrew’s Church in Toronto that provides essential items, including food and medical care, to unhoused populations. The positive impacts of this initiative were recognized nationally, so much so that this model has been implemented across the country. She has also engaged in philanthropy by supporting charities including Second Harvest and Portland Place.
Her work in uncovering truths through investigative journalism, along with her commitment to volunteering, was the impetus for her appointment to the Order of Canada in 2013. The Stevie Cameron Memorial Emerging Reporter Fund for Investigative Journalism honours her lifelong dedication to both community service and journalism by providing funding for aspiring journalists to pursue meaningful stories.
