Established in loving memory of Robin A. Dorrell, the Robin A. Dorrell Bursary honours his lifelong commitment to helping others by providing financial support to students pursuing and completing their post-secondary studies at Carleton University.

Robin was born in London but through his mother’s career at Canada House in Trafalgar Square, Robin met many Canadians whose kindness left a lasting impression on him.

When he immigrated to Canada on his own at just 17 years of age, Robin found and credited the encouragement he received from Canadians as an important part of his success throughout his life.

A passionate traveller and lifelong learner, Robin built enduring friendships across Canada and around the world, including in France, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, where many of his family members reside. His early career experiences were as diverse as his interests, ranging from military service to working as a delivery boy. He ultimately combined his love of language, literature and theatre by earning a Master of Arts degree from Carleton University. This achievement led to a fulfilling career that included founding his own creative writing company, working as a theatre critic and professor and administrator at Algonquin College.

Robin’s passion for teaching, mentoring and supporting others was one of his defining qualities. His kindness, encouragement and genuine interest in people left a lasting impact on students, colleagues, friends and family alike. He had a remarkable ability to form meaningful connections wherever he went—whether with local residents during his time living in France, members of his literary club, or the many friends and loved ones he welcomed to his cottage each summer.

Some of Robin’s greatest joys were found in simple pleasures such as cooking, reading, creating stained glass windows, quiet days at the cottage surrounded by the lake, his daylily garden, and the call of loons, as well as many travel adventures shared with his beloved wife and best friend, Barbara. He will be remembered for his gift of storytelling, his ability to bring warmth and vibrancy to everyday conversations, and the dry wit and humour that delighted everyone fortunate enough to know him.

The Robin A. Dorrell Bursary reflects the generosity and compassion that Robin showed others throughout his life. Through this bursary, his legacy will continue to support future generations of students, helping them pursue their goals and achieve their potential—just as Robin encouraged so many others to do.

Awarded annually to students entering or continuing in any program of study who are in demonstrated financial need. Endowed in 2026 by Barbara Dorrell in loving memory of Robin A. Dorrell, BA/66, DPA/67, MA/68.
