The Professor T. Joseph Scanlon Basketball Award for Academic Excellence is awarded annually to student athletes proceeding from one year to another who are members of Carleton University’s Men’s or Women’s Varsity Basketball Programs. Recipients must meet CIS and OUA academic eligibility requirements and be listed on a CIS/OUA Eligibility Certificate as a member of a Carleton University inter-university basketball team. Alternating between male and female athletes, the award will be presented to the returning player with the best academic performance for the previous season. A committee determined by the Awards Office and the Department of Recreation and Athletics will select the annual recipient. Professor Joe Scanlon believed in developing the successful “student athlete” and was instrumental in launching a study hall program for the men’s basketball team in the early 1990s. The award was established by family and friends in 2015.
