Two fellowships are awarded annually, one to a graduate student in the Department of Geography and one to a graduate student in the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, and may be held in combination with a teaching or research assistantship. The fellowships were established in 1980 by relatives, friends, former students, and faculty and staff colleagues as a memorial to the late Philip Ernest Uren who was a professor of geography between 1965 and 1979, and who served the University as Chair of the Department of Geography, Director of the Institute of Soviet and East European Studies, Director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, and Director of the Paterson Centre for International Programs.
