Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs to a graduate student doing research work in the Arctic. Established 2011 by Jason Goveas, in memory of a friend, Martin Bergmann, Director of the Polar Continental Shelf Project (PCSP), who left a remarkable legacy resulting from his 25 year career working in Arctic research. Martin believed strongly that policy should be supported by the results of research and encouraged researchers to build bonds with the people in the communities they worked in. Martin, a father of four, was one of 12 people killed on August 20, 2011 in a plane crash in Resolute Bay, Nunavut.
