Awarded annually to a student at Carleton University continuing in undergraduate studies who has completed the equivalent of at least 5.0 credits beyond entrance requirements at the University and has demonstrated a high potential for university studies. Preference will be for female students. Recipients must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada. To be eligible, the candidate must have maintained a high academic standing and be registered as a part-time student. Donor: Canadian Federation of University Women/Ottawa. First established in 1952 in honour of Dr. Alice E. Wilson. Renamed in honour of Dr. Ruth Bell. Dr. Bell was club president from 1968-70, national president of the Canadian Federation of University Women from 1973-76, IFUW Convenor of Membership Standards 1974-80, IFUW Convenor for Status of Women and Cultural Affairs 1980-86, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1981. Dr. Bell was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Carleton University in 1984. She received the Governor General Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case in 2005.
