Established in honour of the late Doug MacFarlane, the Doug MacFarlane Award for Excellence in Debating reflects his lifelong commitment to teaching and learning, both inside and outside the classroom. A proud alumnus of Carleton University with degrees in Political Science and Public Administration, Doug furthered his passion for higher education by completing a degree in Education at Queen’s University.

This award reflects Doug’s dedication to alleviating financial barriers and expanding access to experiential learning opportunities, in alignment with the Carleton University Debating Society’s core mission to ensure debate is accessible to all. As a natural leader, Doug actively participated in debating throughout his academic journey—an experience that resonated with him throughout his life. The family hopes this inspires other students to follow in Doug’s footsteps by participating in debate to enhance their academic journey.

The purpose of this fund is to support the Carleton University Debating Society. Eligible expenses may include but are not limited to the costs of travel and accommodation for participating in debate competitions and conferences, cost related to hosting debating events and competitions and training expenses. Endowed in 2025 by Carole MacFarlane BA/74 in loving memory of her husband Robert Douglas (Doug) MacFarlane BA/56, DPA/65and BA/75.
