Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of the Arthur Kroeger College to undergraduate students enrolled in the third year of the Bachelor of Global and International Studies at Carleton University.  Eligible recipients will be participating in the International Exchange component of the program and will demonstrate financial need.  Endowed in 2018 by Chris H. Braeuel MA/2000.

Carleton’s Bachelor of Global and International Studies (BGInS) program is an innovative, multi-disciplinary, program that welcomed its first students in 2015.  The goal of the program is to educate active and engaged global citizens by producing a global mindset—an approach to the world that encourages immersion in new places, cultures and languages. This mindset involves learning multiple pathways to knowledge, understanding our rights and responsibilities toward each other, developing intercultural competencies and principled ways of thinking and acting in the global context.

As part of the undergraduate Honours program, it is mandatory for students to complete an International Experience Requirement. The Chris H. Braeuel Bursary for Global and International Studies is endowed in perpetuity and will provide funds each year for students in need to complete this component and gain real-world experience, regardless of financial barriers.

As the recipient of the 2017 Carleton Alumni Humanitarian Award, Chris Braeuel gravitated towards establishing this award based on his desire to support students in value-added ways over the long-term. Through his cumulative knowledge and experience in over 80 countries spanning 6 continents, Chris continues to serve with passion and commitment and enjoys sharing that enthusiasm with students as a Mentor.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be able to support students in need with their international placements, a key component of the BGInS program. Having served abroad in my youth, I recall with fondness and appreciation not only the life-changing experiences that etched my career path in stone but also the financial support that made it possible. The world is experiencing unprecedented challenges and opportunities. It is my hope that this bursary will grow and benefit generations of students committed to global citizenship and positive change.”
