The Department of Law and Legal Studies has established a student award to honour the memory of Barb Higgins (January 2, 1963 – February 20, 2021), who was dedicated to supporting others and building community.

Barb Higgins was the longest serving member of the Department of Law and Legal Studies’ front office administrative staff, having worked for the Department for over 30 years. Barb liked to note that, along the way, she served in acting roles in almost every administrative job in the Department. Not surprisingly, she knew just about everything about how our office works and was an invaluable resource. Barb helped orient all the new hires to our office, including the new Chairs! She will be remembered especially for her bright smile and the warm welcome she provided to visitors to our office. Barb worked on behalf of all of us, but she had a special place in her heart for our graduate students and especially our contract instructors, for whom she was often the go-to person in the Department.

This award is in recognition of qualities that made Barb so special – a dedication to supporting others and building community.

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Law and Legal Studies to an outstanding student proceeding from one year to another in a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law. Eligible students will exemplify a dedication to supporting others and building a sense of community.  Established in 2021 in memory of Barb Higgins, by friends and colleagues.
