Overview
For over ten years, Carleton University students in Business, Industrial Design, Environmental Engineering and Food Sciences have collaborated to work alongside the Maasai community in the Longido region of Tanzania, helping to create efficient and sustainable solutions to community needs in the form of new, innovative projects. Past projects have focused on issues such as health, agriculture, waste management, community infrastructure. This year, Carleton Business and Industrial Design students will be working together once again to deliver new projects, fresh perspectives, and innovative ideas. We hope that you’ll join us in creating a positive impact on the Longido community, providing a new cohort of students with the opportunity of a lifetime, and strengthening our ties in Tanzania.
Our student projects have won numerous awards, including 7 Acido Rocket awards, 2 Aga Khan fellowships, The Enactus Scotiabank Climate Challenge Best Idea award, a Red Dot award, Dubai Design Week best projects, the NIBS David Gillingham award, the Carleton Provost’s Scholar Award, and more.
We have an incredible opportunity to be part of this change. Partnered with Tembo and Echo East Africa Impact Centre, we are working alongside local Maasai community members to bring innovative, student-driven ideas to life. Together, we are co-creating solutions to address critical needs such as safe and accessible water, developing further education, economic growth and food security. With your support, we can fuel these projects, empowering the community of Longido and creating lasting change.
The Rollout
Donations to this campaign will enable students to take their projects forward by funding field work that includes on-the-ground prototype development and testing. Students will gain skills in cross-cultural communication, international development, and community engagement.
Funds will be used for on-the-ground costs for an intensive two week field trip to Tanzania, including:
- Transportation
- Accommodations
- Local facilitators
Students will be staying in the guest house of our NGO partner in Longido village. Your support will also help with prototype modification and testing, market data acquisition, patent searches, and related material costs to take our ideas and innovations to reality.
The Impact
These projects support Carleton’s commitment to community engagement, and will result in lasting benefits for our partner community. Your support is crucial in our mission to empower the Longido community and create sustainable change. Check out our Instagram for updates and progress on this year’s exciting projects!
