Overview
Air transportation is an essential component of the Canadian economic infrastructure. Once a nation-building tool, it now contributes directly to the well-being of Canadians and their standard of living. This vital contribution to the country is bound to continue in the future even in the context of climate change challenges and economic uncertainty.
There is a dearth in Canada of institutionally-organized education in air transport policy. Not surprisingly, competence and capacity in this area have declined over the years. The vision at the core of the Transportation Policy Innovation Centre (TPIC), housed in the School of Public Policy and Administration, is to fill this gap by providing cutting edge training to Carleton graduate students to become the next generation of highly-effective air transport analysts.
The Background
Air transport supports people-to-people links, labour mobility as well as trade in goods and services. This critical activity is heavily-regulated nationally and internationally. This heavy regulatory framework can hinder or promote the financial viability of the various components of the air transport value chain.
The cause of the present campaign is to provide an opportunity to a group of Carleton graduate students to participate in the annual simulation of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (“Model ICAO”). ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations headquartered in Montréal. The event exposes students to real high-level diplomatic and technical discussions taking place in the ICAO Council. Students represent actual Member States and participate in simulated deliberations on important matters related to international civil aviation. They are asked to develop informed policy positions and present them convincingly to other delegations.
The Rollout
The funds raised would be used to cover the registration and travel expenses of the students to participate in an innovative experiential learning activity. The TPIC needs $8,000 to bring students to this 5-day event.
The Impact
Your support would help the TPIC increase the flow rate in the federal public service and Canadian air transport industry of high-potential alumni who have a solid base of knowledge in air transport.
