Overview
Empowering Students Through Esports, Technology, and Community:
CU Esports is Carleton University’s student-led esports community, dedicated to creating opportunities for students to compete, connect, and develop valuable skills through gaming and technology. Our club brings together students from across campus through competitive teams, tournaments, community events, and large-scale esports initiatives.
Our goal is simple: to create a sustainable, inclusive, and competitive esports program at Carleton University that provides meaningful opportunities for students both inside and outside the classroom.
Our Regional Initiative: Frostfire:
At the heart of CU Esports’ programming is Frostfire, our regional two-day gaming LAN tournament hosted at Carleton University.
FROSTFIRE brings students and members of the Ottawa gaming community together for a large-scale esports experience featuring competitive tournaments, casual gaming, live broadcasts, and community programming. This event also attracts high level out of region players to come to Ottawa.
Our most recent FROSTFIRE attracted approximately:
- +300 attendees
- 2 days of programming
- Multiple competitive esports tournaments
- Live professional-style Twitch broadcasting
- Tournament administration and production
- Marketing, sponsorship, and community engagement initiatives
Frostfire is more than a gaming tournament. It is an opportunity for students to take ownership of a large-scale event and gain hands-on experience in event management, finance, marketing, communications, broadcasting, web development, tournament operations, and technical production.
The Background
CU Esports exists to create accessible opportunities for students to connect, compete, and develop real-world skills through esports and gaming. We aim to build a stronger student community through competitive and recreational gaming while providing students with opportunities to develop leadership, technical, creative, and professional skills.
Esports provides students with unique opportunities to take on meaningful responsibilities. Behind every tournament is a team of students managing logistics, finances, marketing, technology, broadcasting, communications, and event operations. By creating these opportunities, CU Esports allows students to gain practical experience in a collaborative environment while developing skills such as leadership, problem-solving, communication, organization, and teamwork.
We also recognize that not every student has access to a high-end gaming computer, a dedicated gaming space, or an established community of players. CU Esports strives to reduce these barriers by creating opportunities for students to participate on campus, whether they are experienced competitive players or simply looking for a community to belong to.
Ultimately, our cause is about using esports as a vehicle for student opportunity. We want to create an environment where students can find community, challenge themselves, develop transferable skills, and leave university with experiences that contribute to their personal and professional growth.
With the support of funders and community partners, CU Esports can make these opportunities more accessible, expand our programming, and build a sustainable esports community that continues to benefit Carleton students for years to come.
The Rollout
Funding will allow CU Esports to expand our programming, improve accessibility, and provide students with more opportunities to participate in esports at Carleton University and beyond.
- Frostfire: Support venue costs, equipment, tournament operations, broadcasting, marketing, and production to grow our flagship event and reach more students and community members.
- Dedicated Campus Space: Help secure and maintain a space where students can access gaming equipment, competitive teams can practice, executives can plan events, and the community can gather for tournaments and activities.
- Student Events: Fund tournaments, gaming nights, watch parties, and other community events throughout the academic year, creating more accessible opportunities for students to participate.
- National & International Competition: Support Carleton esports teams in participating in recognized national and international leagues and competitions, allowing students to compete at a higher level and represent Carleton University on a broader stage.
- Equipment & Infrastructure: Invest in gaming, tournament, and production equipment that can be reused across multiple events and programs, creating sustainable value for future students.
Ultimately, funding will help CU Esports build a sustainable esports program that provides competition, community, experiential learning, and opportunities for students to represent Carleton University locally, nationally, and internationally.
The Impact
CU Esports is more than a gaming club. It is a platform for students to build community, develop practical skills, and gain experiences that extend beyond their time at Carleton University.
Academically, CU Esports gives students opportunities to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects. Through initiatives such as FROSTFIRE, students gain hands-on experience in event management, finance, marketing, communications, web development, broadcasting, and technology. They work with real budgets, deadlines, participants, and stakeholders, turning academic knowledge into practical experience.
Personally, CU Esports provides students with a welcoming community built around a shared interest. Members develop friendships, confidence, teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills. Taking on responsibilities within the club allows students to step outside their comfort zones, whether they are organizing tournaments, managing finances, creating content, operating broadcasts, or leading teams.
Within the broader community, our events bring students and community members together through accessible gaming experiences. Our flagship event, FROSTFIRE, recently welcomed approximately 300 attendees in and out of region. With additional support, we can expand FROSTFIRE and create more opportunities for students who may not have access to high-end gaming equipment or organized esports programming.
The lasting impact of CU Esports is the skills, relationships, leadership experience, and sense of belonging that students carry with them beyond university. By supporting our campaign, funders are helping create a sustainable student-led community where each generation can learn, lead, and build opportunities for those who follow.
