Overview
Motivated students from the Sprott School of Business & Varsity Athletics at Carleton University are working alongside indigenous communities in Longido, Tanzania and Masset, BC, to continue supporting ongoing projects and creating innovative solutions. Projects include sports programs, leadership development programs and health and wellness initiatives. This course has been ongoing for 13 years, and each year provides great experiential learning opportunities to students by helping to solve real world problems.
The Background
Our motive for this project is to create unique opportunities in rural communities and generate sustainable change through various projects. These projects include: starting and supporting sports clubs, leadership programs, new businesses, enhancing financial paths, and supporting technological innovations. We aim to transform these communities in Masset, British Columbia and Longido, Tanzania, through youth programs and infrastructure changes. While helping these communities is crucial to our cause, the value of the skills learnt cannot be understated. Students will develop cross-cultural relationships and learn how a team can create community-based and culturally sensitive solutions to various challenges in a community.
The Rollout
Over the next few months, we will actively communicate with our target communities to maximize the initiative’s impact. We will begin with a comprehensive community needs assessment. Using these findings, we will establish clear goals and objectives that align with the community’s priorities. By developing a detailed logistical plan and a well-structured budget, while maintaining the long-term results-based approach, we will work to achieve meaningful change. Our budget will specifically focus on travel costs, essential logistics, community engagement activities, and on-the-ground expenses.
The Impact
Your contribution to Courts for Change will have a lasting impact on diverse communities, providing youth with access to sports and wellness programs that foster health, friendship, and critical life skills. Participants develop expertise in finance, leadership, technology, and business through practical, real-world applications. These opportunities not only boost graduation rates but also instill a renewed sense of purpose and the tools necessary for future success.
