JDC Central is a three day event that showcases academics, athletics, social spirit, and charity. Delegates compete in academic case competitions, parliamentary style debates, sports tournaments and social competitions. The event allows students to showcase all aspects of university life from school spirit and dedication, to academic skills and teamwork.
Academic: Each school enlists eight academic teams representing various concentrations of business, including accounting, business strategy, entrepreneurship, finance, human resources, international business, management information systems, and marketing. Each team is composed of three students. Teams are given three hours to prepare a twenty minute presentation, which they will then present to a panel of industry professionals.
Debate: The debate teams are composed of four talented individuals who compete in parliamentary style, head-to-head debates on current and challenging topics in business. Teams are notified of their topic thirty minutes prior to the debate, in which time they prepare their opinionated arguments. With the ability to interject your opponent’s speech, debate proves to be the most heated portion of the competition.
Sports: Eight top athletes will compete in two sports tournaments over the course of the competition. Teams will be put to the test based on endurance, skill, and team spirit.
Social: Social teams are comprised of four energetic and outgoing individuals who will be summoned to multiple unconventional challenges at any day, any given time throughout the competition. “Socialites” will be tested based on creativity, character, improvisation, and school spirit. The social competition is undoubtedly the most unpredictable and comical aspect of JDC Central.
Charity: Each school hosts multiple fundraisers and spends hours volunteering from September until the January. Schools compete to be the most charitable school overall, collectively making a huge impact throughout Ontario, Quebec and the East Coast. The capstone event for the charity portion of the competition is called “Groovin’ for Charity,” where schools spend hours outside dancing and collecting donations for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
JDC Central is Canada’s fastest growing business student competition. In 2016 there were 600 competitors from 12 major business schools, making JDC Central one of the largest competitions around. JDCC boasts the most talented and well rounded students from across Central & Atlantic Canada. This year, JDC Central will be hosted from January 5th to 7th at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The JDCC Sprott team will spend countless hours training its’ 45 competitors from September until January.
Training and attending the competition comes with many team expenses. For that reason, JDCC Sprott is committed to fundraising $5,000 through crowdfunding to alleviate the pressure of sponsorship and competitors paying from their own pockets. The funds will go directly towards transportation to and from the competition in Halifax, facility bookings for the Sports team, case documents and printing for the Academic teams, and costume budgets for the Social team.
JDCC Sprott competitors spend countless hours practicing for the competition. Through the program, these students are connected with industry professionals who assist them to develop their confidence, business acumen, and networks that create future job opportunities. Training costs are inevitably expensive, and so the team’s ability to attend the competition could not be possible without funding.
