Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR)

The rundown

The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is an annual competition that offers engineering students from across the country with the opportunity to design, test, build, and race a toboggan with a running surface made entirely out of concrete. The toboggan must meet safety requirements, and have fully functional steering and braking systems. In addition, each team must produce a technical report and exposition, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with the entire engineering process.

During the competition the toboggans are evaluated on the concrete mix design, braking and steering systems, superstructure, sustainability, and environmental impact. Both the design and performance of the sled are scored. In addition, the team members are judged on their technical report, presentation, sportsmanship, and spirit.

Background

Founded in 1947, the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is the longest running engineering competition in Canada. Students design, build, and race toboggans with a concrete running surface. The toboggans are required to be less than 150 kg, withstand an impact at 80 km/h, and house fully functional braking and steering systems. This is an opportunity for students to display their engineering ingenuity, creativity, and innovation.

Rollout

This money will be used to cover the various cost of the team including concrete aggregate, metal supplies, lumber, team uniforms, travel and accommodation costs, and competitor registration. Your sponsorship gives students the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge through experiential learning.

Impact

The money donated will impact the more than 25 dedicated engineering students chosen for the 2018 GNCTR team. These students enjoy the hands-on experience that designing and building the sled provides, as well as the opportunity to expand their knowledge. Students put many hours of work in the lab designing and constructing the concrete slab, superstructures, brake and steering system, and the technical exhibition. All of this takes time, effort, commitment, and funding. In the past few years our team has taken home awards for Best Concrete Mix Design, Most Sustainable Team, and multiple spirit awards. With your support and our hard work, Team Carleton is looking forward to another successful year.
