The MacOdrum Library is used widely by our campus community. It provides resources, spaces and helpful staff to support great moments of discovery. We maintain and update our collections to make sure we can always provide current, reliable, relevant resources that support and expand learning.
To date, Carleton faculty, staff and retirees have donated and pledged a total of $106,000 to the MacOdrum Library Collections fund. Our goal now is to raise an additional $24,000 in new gifts and pledges for library collections by December 2018.
In appreciation of all campus community donors who help us achieve our campaign goal of $130,000, we will name the main-floor classroom in the MacOdrum Library for Faculty, Staff and Retirees of Carleton University.
Library collections goes beyond books to subscriptions, online resources, journals, archives, maps, music collections and more. In addition to the purchases and subscriptions our budget allows, we depend on gifts to add more, new, current resources.
We are guided by department needs to build a collections ‘wishlist’ and identify priority acquisitions. Some of the resources that are current acquisition priorities include:
Caribbean History and Culture, 1535-1920. $4,800 USD – More than 1,200 catalogued and searchable books, diaries, letters, and other materials that reveal the history of the region.
Archives Unbound: Newspapers of the French Revolution 1848. $7,315 USD -Newspapers published in France during the revolution of 1848, representing many aspects of 19th-century French life, including political journalism; women’s periodicals; literary, musical, theatre and opera reviews; medical and trade titles; and more.
Oxford Bibliographies Online. $5000 USD per Subject – Oxford Bibliographies offers exclusive, authoritative research guides. Combining the best features of an annotated bibliography and a high-level encyclopedia, this cutting-edge resource guides researchers to the best available scholarship across a wide variety of subjects.
Treatise on Geochemistry. $11,341 USD – A comprehensive, integrated summary of all major subjects in the field, ranging from the chemistry of the solar system to environmental geochemistry.
Journal of Fluid Mechanics Digital Archive – 1956-1996. $18,975 USD – Fully searchable, online collection of this leading international journal covering the fundamental aspects of fluid mechanics, and their applications to aeronautics, astrophysics, biology, chemical and mechanical engineering, hydraulics, meteorology, oceanography, geology, acoustics and combustion.
Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition. $4000 CAD – Augmented reality head set used for game development, design, and prototype 3D modeling preview in the Discovery Centre (4th floor of the Library).
Our ‘wishlist’ is constantly changing as we discover new publications, on-line collections, research materials etc. relevant to our programs of study. Every gift we receive goes directly to resources that serve our university’s programs of study.
Because of the cross-campus value our library provides, we’re asking faculty, staff and retirees to identify the MacOdrum Library Collections Fund as the beneficiary of your Collaborate Campaign gift. Monthly payroll deduction is an easy way to make a commitment and budget your giving over the next three years; you can set that up by selecting ‘Payroll Deduction’ during the gift process.
Everyone at Carleton ends up walking through the doors of the library at some point, whether it’s for a resource, a conversation, an event, or a quiet space. Having crucial, up-to-date, rich resources available to support these experiences is one of the ways we help our students acquire a superior education, and use that education to bring good into the world.
