Overview

Drama Studies, housed in the English Department, provides an opportunity for students to “Indulge Your Dramatic Side” while pursuing Undergraduate degrees in a variety of disciplines. Students of Drama Studies have the option to complete a Concentration or a Minor. Courses are divided into the academic and the practical, with scholars teaching performance theories and analysis, and local theatre professionals teaching practical workshop courses. Thus, students are provided with a balance of theory and practice. This campaign aims to amplify the opportunity for experiential learning and increase student engagement while providing access to specialized expertise in the field of stagecraft by offering an Artist-in-residence opportunity.

The Background

In recent years, the program has added new courses, including one that focuses on Indigenous Drama, and another that is a practicum course where students work directly with a local Children’s Theatre Company to learn how to create and manage such a venture. Now, we’re ready to develop and sustain an Artist-in-Residence component to the program that benefits students, artists, and community members. An Artist-in-residence program will provide students with access to an established artist and allow them the chance to work directly on a particular project with a professional working in their field.

The Rollout

The funds raised in this campaign will provide support to an established artist, who could come from the areas of design, directing, and/or playwrighting.  Such support will provide the artist with an opportunity to share their expertise with students, faculty, and community members connected to the Carleton Dominion Chalmers Centre in downtown Ottawa. The collaborative possibilities associated with this project offer the opportunity to connect academic units like Music, Architecture, Business, English, and the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies, as well as open dialogues with the broader performing arts community.

The Impact

We recognize how important the performing arts are for students to develop the skills necessary to meet the challenges of the world in which we live. When we give students the opportunity to build and expand their knowledge and critical skills in the dramatic arts, they don’t just indulge in their passion, but they experience learning as a joyful endeavour. They don’t just survive, but they also thrive. This project will provide students with knowledge they can take beyond the classroom, and into the world. Your support can help us put student learning centre stage.
