Did you know that Carleton offers opportunities for undergraduate students to conduct their own research and to be awarded for doing great things with it? Undergraduate research provides students opportunities to work with a professor in their field and gain experience with the research process and be awarded for noteworthy work.
Undergraduate research opportunities build on the experiences of undergraduates in their academic studies. Students can be linked to specialized projects or to work on subject-specific research under the direction of a faculty supervisor.
The Discovery Centre offers I-CUREUS (Internship – Carleton University Research Experience for Undergraduate Students) as an initiative that supports students in their undergraduate years to conduct beneficial research that may inspire them to continue into graduate studies. Beyond the experiential learning opportunity, students are working on research that has a broader impact on the greater good in our community. For example, previous areas of research have included:
- Neuroscience and mental health
- Criminal Justice
- Migration and Innovation
- Social Entrepreneurship
- Solar energy
The funds are used to compensate students for the time they spend doing research work. I-CUREUS offers students the opportunity to receive up to $2250 for faculty-supervised research. Half is funded by the Discovery Centre and half by the faculty supervisor. We are seeking donor support to increase the number of internships available to students.
The impact on students’ experience is profound. Through this experience, students gain:
- Valuable exposure to research techniques
- Connections with professors who can act as academic mentors
- Experience writing a research paper under faculty supervision
“The most valuable skills I have gained from this experience are the laboratory skills I have learned. I have also gained a better understanding of the research process. In the classroom, the experiments we are conducting have expected results and have been conducted many times in the past by other students, but through the I-CUREUS program the research I get to help with is exploring new ideas with hypothesized outcomes.”
“It is the best chance you will have to get an idea of how professional research is conducted early on in your academic career. From presenting, to working closely with professors, to time scheduling, I-CUREUS prepares you for a future in academia.”
“If you love a challenge Go for it, this has been the most rewarding experience, I would do it a thousand times over. I got so many opportunities that I would not have gotten without the program. Participate in I-CUREUS because you just might fall in love with research, find your passion make amazing connections with professors and get to learn new skills.”
