The Enriched Support Program Scholarship funds will acknowledge excellence and motivate effort for Enriched Support Program students at the Centre for Initiatives in Education. Students who complete the Enriched Support Program and advance to Carleton degrees are unfortunately NOT eligible for current Carleton scholarships. At the Centre for Initiatives in Education, we created this scholarship program to recognize and reward our students who have not only persevered and qualified for a degree, but have demonstrated excellence.
Every year, the Enriched Support Program (ESP) at Carleton University supports students who experience barriers entering into university for reasons of GPA, learning needs, and former educational experiences. Students in ESP must complete the program with a required minimum average to be admitted to a degree program at Carleton.
Centre for Initiatives in Education scholarship funding for ESP students who have completed ESP successfully with outstanding grades and participation allows us to recognize and reward the dedication and hard work of these students, many of whom are succeeding despite a variety of educational barriers – whether that is their learning needs, financial hardship, past adverse educational experiences, and more.
Enriched Support Program students from the Centre for Initiatives in Education have gone on to degrees from Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Engineering, Computer Science, and Sciences. More than 5,000 students have come through the Enriched Support Program over the years. Currently, almost 1000 former ESP students are currently enrolled in a Carleton degree program, and 1,660 have graduated from Carleton.
Patrick Mayangi, Political Science Graduate: “My high school grades weren’t great, but that shouldn’t define me or the rest of my life. [The staff] understands that and took a chance on me. I’ll always be grateful for the opportunities that have been made possible by my ESP experience.”
Nora Jorjani, Psychology Graduate: “I had such a positive experience with ESP. With the support of instructors, mentors, facilitators, advisors and coaches, I was able to overcome many obstacles with which I had previously struggled, both academically and personally. The program staff made me feel heard and cared about; I knew they truly wanted me to succeed, and that gave me the confidence to excel. I feel as though the possibilities of what I can achieve are endless, and I owe that confidence and ambition to my ESP experience.”
These funds will provide scholarships to Enriched Support Program students who have successfully completed the program with an A- or higher average and excellent attendance.
Many of our former students have succeeded in a variety of ways. Former Enriched Support Program students go on to participate in higher education, complete their Bachelor degrees – and for some, advanced degrees – and they enter a variety of professions. Yet for most ESP applicants, they would not have gotten into university in the first place, despite having the desire and aptitude. Frequently, adverse circumstances got in the way and prevented them from being able to enter directly into a degree program. Students who come through the Enriched Support Program demonstrate incredible dedication and perseverance in pursuing their educational goals. Knowing a scholarship is available for their efforts during their ESP year helps students stay motivated, helps them to set up and maintain the good academic habits and skills that they need to succeed.
