The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is an annual competition that offers engineering students from across the country the opportunity to design, build, test, and race a toboggan made out of metal and concrete. This competition allows students to showcase their technical knowledge of materials and structures and their ability to design and work with concrete. In addition, each team must produce a technical report and exposition, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with the entire engineering process.
We are seeking donors to help us to compete in this year’s competition held in Edmonton, Alberta from January 30th to February 3rd, 2019. Your support is important to our team and we thank you for your consideration. Your donation gives students the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge through experiential learning.
Founded in 1975, the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race is the longest running national engineering competition in Canada. Each team must design and build a toboggan which can safely carry five passengers. All toboggans must consist of an entirely concrete running surface, a structural frame, a breaking system, and a functional steering system, all while weighing less than 300lbs. This is an opportunity for students to display their engineering ingenuity, creativity, and innovation.
During the competition the toboggans are evaluated on their design and performance in a variety of categories including concrete mix design, braking system, steering system, and sustainability. The teams are also judged on their technical report, presentations, sportsmanship, and spirit.
This year’s competition will be held in Edmonton, Alberta. In order to compete Carleton’s GNCTR team aims to raise approximately $5000 to cover costs for competition registration, team travel and accommodations, and most importantly the toboggan materials and assembly. Your donation will be vital in reaching this goal. Any support is greatly appreciated and is extremely helpful in offsetting the cost of this project.
The 2018/2019 season will be Carleton University’s 24th year competing in GNCTR. This year the team consists of more than 20 dedicated engineering students, from varying years and engineering streams at Carleton. Every student on the team puts in countless hours of work in the lab designing and constructing the concrete slabs, superstructure, braking and steering systems, and the technical exhibition. All of this takes time, effort, commitment, and funding. In the past few years our team has taken home awards for Best Concrete Mix Design, Most Sustainable Team, and multiple spirit awards. With your support and our hard work Team Carleton is looking forward to another successful year of making Carleton University proud!
