Overview
The Carleton Concrete Canoe Team is a team of interdisciplinary students whose goal is to design and complete a canoe composed primarily of concrete through a series of in-water races.
For the last 24 years, Canadian universities have been building concrete canoes for a national race held by the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE). Each design is evaluated on academic, technical, and sports aspects.
The competition provides engineering students with the opportunity to apply theories and concepts learned in class. For many future engineers, this is a first hands-on experience that contributes greatly to their education.
Our team is divided into two main subgroups; Design and Build. Each subgroup is composed of dedicated students that are ready to take on the challenge of designing and building our First Canoe.
As a team, we aim to apply the technical knowledge learned from our courses to put our best foot forward as we enter our first year of this competition.
The Background
We are Megan Suchon and Davis Moore, Carleton’s Concrete Canoe Captains. From the beginning of our academic careers at Carleton University, we both have wanted to explore our interest in concrete design through the technical application. As two dedicated students under the Civil and Environmental faculty, our goal is to represent our University at the National Competition occurring next May. We want to demonstrate what Carleton Engineering has to offer on the national stage. Alongside our team, we have put a lot of effort into getting this project off the ground and we are excited to showcase all of the hard work that has been done up to this point. In conjunction with both our mentors within the faculty and the local chapter of the Candian Society of Civil Engineers, we have curated a design strategy to put our best foot forward coming into this competition as first-time competitors. We hope that the contents of this package fully outline our plans in a way that makes collaboration between the design team and the faculty as easy as possible. As a team, we are counting on your support to realize our design goals. We look forward to building the foundations for this team and representing not only our department but the entire Engineering and Design Faculty here at Carleton.
The Rollout
We will be using these funds to pay for build materials, build equipment, competition fees, and travel expenses.
