The Carleton Ravens Men’s Basketball team won the 2019 national championship in true Carleton fashion — combining a suffocating defence with pinpoint offensive precision as the Ravens continue to be the benchmark for excellence in Canadian university basketball. Our 14th championship win in 17 years was also the fifth season of the successful Dunsmore Challenge. David Dunsmore, a proud graduate and Ravens fan, is devoted to helping the team raise its game even higher. David has agreed to bring back the ‘Challenge’ again this season. Thank you David!
Throughout the past five years, the Challenge has attracted significant philanthropic support for the program, knowing that our competition is working just as hard to do the same. The Challenge enhances the Ravens’ budget, which, while competitive with other programs, is unable to cover all of the costs associated with running an elite U Sports institution and providing the competitive experience our student-athletes deserve.
We need additional funds to enhance practice and game performance, develop new leadership and recruitment opportunities, and provide student-athletes with extra tools to attain and exceed academic goals.
Entering the sixth year of the Challenge, the Ravens have a new head coach in Taffe Charles. Taffe is asking all alumni and supporters to continue investing in the program through the Dunsmore Challenge.
Phase One of this year’s Challenge is to raise $60,000 to ‘unlock’ the Dunsmore Challenge matching opportunity by November 1, 2018.
Phase Two: Mr. Dunsmore will match every gift (received before April 30, 2020) to a maximum of $50,000.
It’s an incredibly generous offer to, once again, help the Ravens access $160,000+ to continue to make the Ravens the flagship U Sports program in the country. The money will support all aspects of the Ravens Men’s Basketball program with a focus on coaching support and non-conference travel opportunities, including NCAA and European competition.

The Dunsmore Challenge has greatly affected the lives of our Ravens these past five years. Exhibition tours to Europe have been the first time most of the players have travelled overseas and the competitive and cultural experiences gained will live with them forever. Our varsity players also benefit from new coaching and training initiatives, keep valuable dollars in their pockets through enhanced meal allowances, which also provide better nutritional options. When our student-athletes can concentrate on playing, instead of out-of-pocket costs, we see the positive repercussions on the court.
