About Carleton GNCTRCarleton University has been participating in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race for over 10 years and has seen tremendous successes. The team is traditionally made up of engineering students whom enjoy the practical aspect of engineering as well as the nature of the competition. Each year approximately 500 students representing 30 teams travel from across Canada to compete against their fellow engineers from different Universities. Volunteer students spend many hours designing and manufacturing the toboggan, technical display, and other competition elements starting in September, working until the competition at the beginning of February. It is a massive undertaking that requires a significant time commitment from everybody involved. The cost of competing in a competition such as GNCTR is quite high. In order to successfully compete in this year’s competition, the team requires approximately $45,000 in funding. The required funding will be used to cover expenses such as:
- Materials for testing and fabrication.
- Team uniforms.
- Technical display and documentation.
- Event registration.
- Travel and flight costs and accommodations.
- Shipping of the toboggan.
